Job Description

Nugent Coachworks design and manufacture a diverse range of automotive commercial vehicle bodies including tilt and slide recovery vehicle bodies of capacity ranging from 7.5T to 30T and industrial plant bodies of capacity 30T and over. As part of the industrial plant body range, the company manufactures bespoke truck and trailer mounted crane bodies based on customer specifications. Market sectors include independent road recovery operators and commercial vehicle resellers.

THE ROLE (FUSION Project) – 18 Month Duration

The company have developed an exciting new concept in the design of crane truck bodies for a specific range of truck and crane configurations. The focus of this FUSION project will be in the use of Finite Element Analysis (FEA) to simulate the behaviour of truck frame and chassis designs subjected to extreme torsional loadings and to design a system to provide even distribution of forces to reduce the impact on the truck frame and chassis. The deflection and stress levels in the truck frame and chassis will be obtained using FEA to test proposed designs before physical testing. Project academic partners – Letterkenny Institute of Technology – will provide technical guidance and assistance in FEA and other aspects of design and manufacture.

Reporting to the Company Supervisor, you will be employed by Nugent Coachworks Ltd to lead this InterTradeIreland FUSION project in partnership with the Letterkenny Institute of Technology. As part of this role you will be required to undertake a Postgraduate Diploma in Business & Management, from the William J. Clinton Leadership Institute at Queen’s University, Belfast. This is fully funded by InterTradeIreland. The skills learned through the Diploma will enhance your personal, professional and managerial capabilities and will provide you with the necessary and valuable business skills to help you undertake your project role. The company will fully support you throughout this by factoring in the required time off to attend modules and workshops.

Job Objectives

• To carry out the tasks outlined in the project workplan and liaise with your Company and Academic Supervisors on an ongoing basis.
• To develop a fit-for-purpose Finite Element Analysis methodology for structural analysis of truck frame and chassis designs in partnership with Letterkenny Institute of Technology and analyse proposed designs using this methodology.
• To convene and service monthly technical meetings with the core project team (Graduate, Company Supervisor and Academic Supervisor)
• To report formally on a quarterly basis on progress with the workplan to a Project Management Group (PMG), this includes the assigned FUSION Consultant representing InterTradeIreland.
• To train staff so that the new technology is fully transferred and embedded in the company
• To work closely with the academic partner and travel to the academic institute as required.
• To undertake the Postgraduate Diploma in Business & Management, attending course modules and workshops.
• Any other duties which might fall within the general ambit of the post.

Skills Required

Essential Criteria
Candidates must possess:
1. Degree in Mechanical/Automotive Engineering or Equivalent
2. Experience of 3D CAD system(s) & knowledge of Finite Element Analysis
3. Legally permitted to work in the UK/EU.

Desirable Criteria
1. Experience in machine design /structural design.
2. Experience of industrially relevant project management
3. Understanding of manufacturing systems and procedures, production, quality control and capacity utilisation
4. Extensive IT skills and capability
5. Ability to travel within the EU
6. Valid passport
