Job Description

Irish Fencing & Railings was founded in 1972 and has grown into a complete fencing service offering manufacturing and installation of a range of fencing types. 2018 is the company’s 45th year in business and it has grown to having bases in Dublin, Cork and Newry which serve the Irish market (RoI and NI). The state of the art manufacturing facility in Dublin offers space for the manufacture, display and demonstration of its of Meshes, Palisade, Gates and other products as well as ease of access for customers. The majority of the products manufactured are installed by the company’s staff. Contracts undertaken range in size and scale from domestic dog pens to fencing the Dublin M50.

THE ROLE (FUSION Project) – 18 Month Duration
Assessment of the current products resulting in a design revision across the entire range creating a new range of products which can be flat packed, manufactured efficiently, held in stock easily, transported at reduced cost, sold online and correctly installed by the customer. The FUSION project will result in cost effective distribution to the Cork and Newry bases thus allowing the company to service a wider market at a better price point. The re-design will also facilitate sales from the Dublin depot and via the company’s new online system thus supporting the move towards a supply only model. As part of the design review, improvements and necessary amendments will be made to the manufacturing system within the company to improve product quality and consistency and facilitate the manufacturing of the new product designs.

Reporting to the Company Supervisor, you will be employed by Irish Fencing & Railings Ltd to lead this InterTradeIreland FUSION project in partnership with the South West College. As part of this role you will be required to undertake a Postgraduate Diploma in Business & Management, from the William J. Clinton Leadership Institute at Queen’s University, Belfast. This is fully funded by InterTradeIreland. The skills learned through the Diploma will enhance your personal, professional and managerial capabilities and will provide you with the necessary and valuable business skills to help you undertake your project role. The company will fully support you throughout this by factoring in the required time off to attend modules and workshops.

Job Objectives

• To carry out the tasks outlined in the project workplan and liaise with your Company and Academic Supervisors on an ongoing basis.
• To convene and service monthly technical meetings with the core project team (Graduate, Company Supervisor and Academic Supervisor)
• To report formally on a quarterly basis on progress with the workplan to a Project Management Group (PMG), this includes the assigned FUSION Consultant representing InterTradeIreland.
• To train staff so that the new technology is fully transferred and embedded in the company
• To work closely with the academic partner and travel to the academic institute as required.
• To undertake the Postgraduate Diploma in Business & Management, attending course modules and workshops.
• Any other duties which might fall within the general ambit of the post.

Skills Required

Essential Criteria

Candidates must possess:
1. To hold or have been awarded a min 2.2 degree in Engineering, Mechanical / Manufacturing / Product Design / Civil by June 2018
2. Experience of 3D CAD design
3. Legally permitted to work in the EU.

Desirable Criteria
1. Experience in Solidworks
2. Postgraduate qualification in a design/design for manufacture
3. Practical experience of working in engineering workshop.
4. Excellent communication skills
